From Kody Steele's first-round finish to Tai Tuivasa's decision loss, here is how every result landed in Perth.
UFC Fight Night touched down at RAC Arena in Perth on May 2, and the main event ended fast. In the lightweight headliner, Kody Steele submitted Dom Mar Fan in the first round, tapping him at 3:56. Steele moves to 9-1-0 and stays perfect on the night’s biggest stage, while Mar Fan drops to 9-3-0. If you had Steele finishing early in your app picks, this was the cleanest possible payoff.
The co-main went the distance. Jonathan Micallef edged Themba Gorimbo by decision over three rounds, improving to 11-1-0 and handing the veteran Gorimbo (now 14-8-0) another setback. It was a grinding welterweight nod rather than a finish, but Micallef’s hand was raised at the final horn.
Submissions were a theme. In the middleweight bout between Ben Johnston and Wes Schultz, it was Schultz who found the finish, tapping Johnston in the third round at 1:50 to climb to 10-3-0. Johnston falls to 5-3-0.
At bantamweight, Colby Thicknesse kept his rise going with a decision over the experienced Vince Morales. Thicknesse improves to 10-1-0, staying near the top of the prospect conversation, while Morales slips to 16-12-0.
Experience did not carry the day in a couple of spots. Jacob Malkoun out-pointed Gerald Meerschaert over three rounds in a middleweight matchup, taking the decision to reach 11-3-0. Meerschaert, one of the most seasoned names on the card at 37-22-0, adds another loss.
The light heavyweight clash was the quickest stoppage of the night. Junior Tafa starched Kevin Christian by KO/TKO in the first round at 2:42, a highlight-reel finish that lifts Tafa to 8-6-0. Christian drops to 9-5-0.
Cam Rowston handled Robert Bryczek by decision in another three-round middleweight bout, moving to 16-3-0 and continuing to build a strong record against a tough, well-traveled opponent in Bryczek (now 18-8-0).
The result that will sting local fans came at heavyweight. Louie Sutherland upset Tai Tuivasa by decision over three rounds. Tuivasa, the most recognizable name on the card, could not close the deal and falls to 15-11-0, while Sutherland grabs arguably the biggest win of his career at 12-5-0. On paper the more famous fighter, Tuivasa was the one left with his hand down after fifteen minutes — the kind of call that busted a lot of picks.
Perth delivered a mix of fast finishes and full-distance decisions. Steele’s first-round submission in the main event is the statement result, and Tafa’s early KO was the loudest highlight. On the other side, Tuivasa’s decision loss and Meerschaert’s defeat show the veterans didn’t get the sendoff the crowd wanted.
For prospects, Thicknesse, Rowston and Micallef all kept winning, quietly stacking the kind of records that force the matchmakers to pay attention.
If your picks nailed Steele early or read the Sutherland upset, that is bragging-rights material. If Tuivasa cost you, you are not alone. Either way, log how you did, compare with your friends, and get your predictions in before the next card locks — the sooner you pick, the sooner you find out who really reads the fights best.
